5 Tips for Spring Cleaning

I’m so excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at my recent spring cleaning with Joy Mangano (yes, the Joy that Jennifer Lawrence played in the 2015 movie about how she got her start on QVC!). Her team reached out about working together to organize my closet, and I jumped on the opportunity. My wardrobe and shoe cabinet were an absolute disaster, because I am admittedly an out-of-sight, out-of-mind person when it comes to keeping our apartment clean. I hate clutter and having things laying around, but tend to shove things into closets and slam the door. Scroll down for the incredible before and after photos, and to read Joy’s top 5 tips for spring cleaning.

1. Out with the Old and Unused

Sometimes we hoard products or put off getting rid of items that should have been tossed a long time ago. When it comes to spring cleaning, be ruthless and toss anything you know you need to get rid of. Don’t be afraid to buy new things, and replace old ones if necessary. Whether that be makeup products, bags that are on their last leg or sheets and pillowcases that are way overdue for a switch.

I’m absolutely obsessed with the hangers by Joy and this amazing over-the-door shoe and earring organizer. I used to store my earrings in a pile in my bathroom cabinet, and I’m loving being able to see all my options when I’m getting ready in the morning.

2. Invest in Proper Cleaning Supplies

While your broom or vacuum might be convenient, they are probably collecting old dust and germs from last time you used them, especially if they are old. Swap them out for a new one and new cleaning products to keep your house sparkling.

3. Work Room By Room

Focus on one room at a time. While your brain might try to get you to start small projects in other rooms, try to stick in one room until it is done. Focusing on one room at a time will help your efficiency and will make you feel accomplished when you have a whole room done.

4. Closet Clean Out

There is an old rule that always comes back around during spring cleaning season: If you haven’t worn it in a year, give it away. While keeping old clothing might bring a comfort factor, hoarding clothes you never wear is just taking up room in your closet. If something is truly sentimental to you but you never wear it, store it away using my covered storage boxes or make room for it by reorganizing your closet with the Huggable Hanger. Everything else that you never wear, donate to a good cause! While you might never wear it, there is someone out there who would love to have it!

Before Joy, my boots were stacked behind my full length mirror in a chaotic pile. I’m loving having them organized into these bins with a top handle, making it easy to grab a whole collection of shoes to chose from at once.

5. Get Some Fresh Air

Get rid of the smell of winter while cleaning by opening your windows and breathing in some fresh air! Fresh air can help clear your mind and motivate you to keep going.
